Formed in 1903 the competition was originally known as the Worksop Guardian Cup after the local newspaper editor at the time Frank Sissons approached teams in and around the area that were travelling elsewhere to play their cricket to format a competition involving less travel across North Notts, East Derbyshire, South Yorks and West Lincolnshire. Today the Bassetlaw & District League acts as a feeder to the Nottinghamshire Premier League and the original trophy remains in use presented to the winners of the championship at the end of every season.
