McGoldrick Magic Earns Notts Point

Stuart Maynard’s Notts County side continue to battle for a spot in the EFL League Two play-offs, but it’s getting a bit tight for those places following their 1-1 draw away to Bradford City, as Colchester United, Grimsby Town and Chesterfield, are within touching distance.

On Thursday, at Valley Parade, County were held by the automatic promotion chasing Bantams, thanks to David McGoldrick’s equaliser with twenty remaining, County finding themselves three without a win and just three successes in their last ten outings

That came after the hosts had opened the scoring less than ten minutes into the second period, Ciaran Kelly heading a free-kick from Brandon Khela past Sam Slocombe; less than fifteen minutes after and County were level.

This time the Birmingham loanee, Khela, found himself beaten by the County striker, who then curled his effort past Sam Walker in the home goal, and into the top corner.

It was a goal that kept the hosts off top spot, and the visitors in the play-offs with a handful of games remaining.

Both sides created chances, but it remained level, as both promotion chasers settled for a point apiece ahead of a full round of matches in the division the following day.

Both County, and fifth place AFC Wimbledon, are four points off slipping out of the play-offs, with four games remaining, the Dons being held themselves when home to one of those promotion hopefuls.

The top three sees Port Vale lead Bradford by two points after they lost 3-2 away to lowly Carlisle United, whilst Walsall are third after a 2-2 draw at Harrogate; Doncaster Rovers joined the former leaders on seventy-two points after they won 3-0 at Tranmere Rovers after Luke Molyneux’s hat-trick.

Grimsby Town missed out on a chance to move level with the Dons and County after they were crushed 4-0 at home to Swindon Town who not only scored twice in each half, but have now scored fifteen times in their last four games.

Just outside of the play-offs, four points off County, and with a game in hand, is a Colchester United side who were held to a goalless draw at home to Crewe Alexandra, Chesterfield held Wimbledon to the same, whilst Salford City, in tenth, were beaten 2-1 at home to Accrington Stanley.

Monday will see a full round of matches across League Two with County hosting mid-table Cheltenham Town hoping to keep they play-off hopes alive; elsewhere in the division leaders Port Vale host Grimsby Town, Doncaster welcome Colchester, and Bradford travel to Chesterfield.

Walsall meanwhile are away to Newport County, AFC Wimbledon travel to mid-table Gillingham, and Salford are at bottom club Morecambe, as twelve points still separate third place Bradford, and tenth place Salford – anything really can happen.
