Tigers Up To Second

A 4-2 win for Worksop Town over Workington on Saturday has the Tigers back in second place in the Northern Premier League as they take full advantage of both Ashton United and Guiseley dropping points. Both drawing their matches against Hyde United and Leek Town respectively.

Worksop’s win takes them to 59 points from 32 played, Craig Parry’s side now level with third placed Ashton but with a much better goal difference whilst they lie a point above Guiseley in fourth.

Runaway leaders Macclesfield on 82 points won’t be caught, but Worksop do have eyes on that second promotion slot via the playoffs and a potential place next season in the National League North, they started well against Workington in front of over 700 at Sandy Lane, scoring early through Liam Hughes after just three minutes.

Workington are mid table but Worksop destroyed their opponents from Cumbria in a stunning first half performance that saw Joe Leesley add a second on 20 and Vaughan Redford make it three on 37, when Jordan Burrow made it four on forty it looked like only one outcome by half time but a resurgent reds in the second half saw Workington pull two back within five minutes, first Steve Rigg netting a minute after the interval before Connor Pani added a second on 50, but when they had Jordan Little sent off on 65 tensions were eased and the Tigers pulled through.

It wasn’t a bad weekend for Basford United who in twentieth, battled to earn a 1-1 draw with Warrington Rylands in front of a healthy crowd of 369 at Greenwich Avenue.

Jake Burton gave Rylands a half time lead on the stroke of the interval before Jamie Williamson levelled on 53, United now on 31 points from 32 played are four points below Matlock Town in the last spot of safety.

In the Northern Premier League East Division on Saturday, Carlton Town drew 2-2 with Newton Aycliffe, Niall Davie and Nat Watson had given the mid-table Millers a half time 2-0 lead but the away side who are fifth in the division responded with an early goal on 48 through Elgie before a 90th minute leveller by Whitfield, Carlton currently sit tenth on 45 points from 30 games played.

Finally a JJ O’Donnell brace inflicted more misery on Sherwood Colliery who are 21st in the 22 team division and facing potential relegation. Alex Duhameau gave Sherwood an early lead against promotion hopefuls Dunston but O’Donnell’s second half brace means the Colls lie level on points with 20th place Liversedge and a point below Bridlington Town, four from safety where Heaton Stannington currently sit in 19th.
