UCL Round Up – Eastwood Marching On
Eastwood continued their march towards the United Counties League Premier North title at the weekend, and in doing so, opened up a six-point lead on second place Bourne Town.
Having disposed of lowly, yet resurgent, Kimberley Miners Welfare, the previous week, the Red Badgers put mid-table Harrowby United to the sword, whilst Bourne, they were losing at home to….. Kimberley Miners Welfare.
First half goals from Terry Hawkridge and Declan Dunn, in a matter of minutes just after the half hour mark, had Eastwood two goals to the good at the break, Hawkridge’s effort his seventh in eleven games since joining.
The second period continued in much the same vein as the first, a further three goals being netted by the rampant hosts as Tyler Blake (20th of the season), Aaron O’Connor (13th of the season), and Phil Watt, all found the back of the net.
It’s now onto the final ten games of the season for the league leaders as they hunt down the title, and with it, promotion; ninth place Melton Town are up next, at home, followed by four away trips on the spin, with Bourne Town at the end of those, and then there be five.
AFC Mansfield are also still in the hunt for promotion, the Bulls edging visitors Deeping Rangers 2-1 thanks to goals from Ryan Ingram, early in the first, and a late winner from William Heather.
Newark Town are sitting sixth, on the fringes of the play-offs, they winning by the same score, but away to Gresley Rovers, Matteo Perkins and Sean Woolley netting, whilst Newark & Sherwood United are tenth, fifteen points off the play-offs, following their 2-0 home win over Shirebrook Town, Luke White and Kieran Cummings with the goals.
As for Kimberley, and coupled with defeat for Deeping, they moved out of the relegation zone, on goal-difference, following a narrow, 1-0 win, at high-flying Bourne, Kamani Wilson netting the only goal of the game which sees them move within nine points of fifteenth place Sleaford Town, with two games in hand on those directly above them.
Just three games involving Notts clubs were played in Division One, as Retford won on the road, at Sandiacre Town, and Retford United lost at Stapleford Town, whilst there was also a heavy defeat, 6-1, for Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Blackstones.
It’s the Choughs that lead the way in the division, three clear of second place Clay Cross Town, who they edged 2-1 at home in midweek, this time, away to Sandiacre Town, they had to settle for a point.
The hosts, sitting bottom of the table, netted through Labrada Domini and Jonathan White, whilst the leaders saw goals from Scott Boden, and a 95th minute equaliser from Jacob Priestnall, snatch a point.
Doing it the hard way, the Choughs also finished the game with ten men, on what was the 200th appearance of captain, and Retford legend, shot-stopper Jon Kennedy.
The Badgers meanwhile, holding onto third, on goal-differed, were beaten to the death, 2-1, away to Stapleford; Jack Upton had the hosts in front early in the first half with Ross Goodwin equalising on the half hour, the sides going in level at the break.
The score stayed that way throughout the second period until stoppage time, when the Saxons snatched all three points courtesy of substitute George Sharman, he having only been on the pitch for ten minutes.
Meanwhile, at Blackstones, a first half hat-trick from William Bestwick helped the hosts to their 6-1 success, Nathan Moss with the consolation effort for lowly Rainworth.
