Midweek Round Up – Tigers Out

It wasn’t the result Worksop wanted as the Tigers of United left without roar the home of King’s Lynn Town on Tuesday night, the Linnets progressing after an FA Cup third qualifying round replay went the distance.

Little separated the two teams over 120 minutes, as did little separate the two in the original tie at Sandy Lane last Saturday, where a late leveller by Luke Hall ensured the two would do battle again.

At the Walks, in the rain, neither team could break the deadlock in a competitive match that saw the home side reduced to ten on ninety, Ross Crane receiving a second yellow to ensure the Norfolk outfit played extra time with ten, but Worksop couldn’t break through, and the match went to penalties with former Notts County winger Terry Hawkridge missing the opening spot kick.

The next five were all netted, but importantly that had the score 3-1 to Lynn, and Worksop missed their next with a spot shot that went wide, there was a retrieve as Seb Markowski saved from Johnson but after Starcenko scored the Tigers fifth to level things temporarily up, it was left to Josh Coulson to net the last to send the National League North team through to the fourth qualifying round where they’ll play Curzon Ashton for a place in round one.

In the Northern Premier League it wasn’t a great night for Basford United either, now under Luke Potter who has come in to replace Manager Martin Carruthers who’s on compassionate leave following a family bereavement, United started well against a Guiseley side going strong in the division, who themselves had beat Scunthorpe at the weekend to win a shock result in the FA Cup.

Guiseley were strong against a gutsy Basford and got their opportunity during a half of little chances, when Lufumbu raced down the right to cross low for Will Longbottom who’s deft touch alluded the Ambers goalkeeper and assistant manager Saul Deeney.

That goal gave new-found confidence to West-Yorkshire based Guiseley who made it two ahead of the break, the gifted Gabriel Johnson sending Longbottom on his way to calmly finish again past Deeney.

Basford did knock the door down in a spirited second half but other than a blocked header at goal the gloves of Joe Cracknell were largely untested and the difference on the night was the firepower of the away side.

Guiseley in fifth are five points behind Worksop Town in second and nine points ahead of Basford in ninth, United have sixteen points from twelve games but will now draw attention this weekend to Hanley Town in the FA Trophy whilst Worksop who are also in action on Saturday against St Ives in the FA Trophy, they have 25 points from ten played which is four points and a game less than leaders Macclesfield.

Elsewhere in the Northern Premier League on Tuesday, Sherwood Colliery drew an entertaining match at Newton Aycliffe 3-3 in the East Division.

Dean Thexton put the home side 1-0 up on 18 minutes before Alex Duhameu equalised on 37. Colls leveller was short lived as Thexton scored again just a minute later but Marley Grant on 63 and Oliver Monington on 75 thought they had done enough to give the away side all three points, however an 89th minute leveller was netted by Dale Elgie to earn a share of the spoils.

Sherwood sit tenth with eleven points from eight played and they host struggling Bishop Auckland at the weekend whilst Carlton Town, currently twelfth in the division, they host Liversedge at the Bill Stokeld Stadium, both Notts based clubs play their respective up coming games on Saturday afternoon at 3pm.

Finally, a handful only of weather effected midweek matches in the United Counties League as Premier Division North leaders Eastwood were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Gresley. Tyler Blake’s sixteenth minute strike levelled late on by Jenson Cooper.

In Division One, Retford United thumped Rainworth Miners Welfare 7-1 with a hat-trick from Kieran Knight amongst those scored, whilst in the KO Cup Dunkirk were battered 12-3 by Bourne Town and Newark Town beat Clifton All Whites in a closer affair 2-1. Joe Smith and Luke Anderson responding to an earlier Tremere Lindo effort.
