A Lot To Be Proud Of – Says Winch
As the season, ever-so slowly, inches towards its closure, only a handful of games in the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League were played on Sunday afternoon, including Basford United.
The Premier Division side, led by co-managers, Jake Hemstock and Sara Harnett, played their last game of a tough season, picking up a huge three-points when away to high-flying Chesterfield.
The visitors, who finish the season in the bottom half, took the lead as early as the second minute, Summer Reece getting on the end of a deep corner from Jess Shaw and heads past Apperley in the home goal.
The Nottinghamshire-base side doubled their lead five minutes before the break when Shaw and Danni Sanderson combine well for the latter to tap home; the hosts though, they got themselves back into the game minutes later, Sophie Marshall arrowing a volley into Emma Porter’s bottom corner.
Leading 2-1 at the break, the second half could have been anyone’s, the hosts striking first, to equalise, on the hour, Marshall capitalising on a defensive error to grab hers, and Chesterfield’s, second of the game.
The winner, it fell to Basford, with a little under twenty remaining, the hosts struggling to a clear a corner and visiting defender, Maisie Plumb, smashed home the decisive third, sealing an important, three points.
Afterwards, visiting Chairman, Sam Winch, said: “Final game of the season and a thoroughly deserved victory.
“A performance that typified the hard-work of both the management/coaching team and all the girls involved.
“Whatever happens next season, there is a lot to be proud of for this talented group!”
