Non-League Roundup: Mixed Results For Notts Sides

There was mixed fortunes across Nottinghamshire’s non-league contingent this past Saturday, including an indifferent set of results for those higher up the pyramid, although Basford United did earn a huge point when at home to high-flying South Shields.

Elsewhere though ten-man Worksop Town lost at Hebburn Town as Cody Cromack saw red, and the visitors saw a penalty saved, Carlton Town fell to the odd-goal-in-five loss at home to Yaxley, Eastwood CFC went down 5-1 at home to Deeping Rangers, and Newark also conceded five when away to Heather St Johns.

In the United Counties Division One however, there was to be plenty of goals amidst a mixed bag of results, a standout being that of Kimberley Miners Welfare’s 5-2 win over Saffron Dynamo, one which sees them level on points with Hinckley at the top of the table (Belper Town, and Radford, below, are ten points behind in joint-second).

Victory for the Notts side stretched their current winning streak to seven matches, and they did so by coming from behind twice in the first period to lead 3-2 at the break, before wrapping up the points in the second half.

Sacha Markelic notched the first equaliser, Aaron Coyle the second, with Luis Rose affording the interval lead; after the break both Coyle, then Markelic, doubled up to complete the scoring, and in turn close that goal difference, which splits the two sides, to five (Hinckley won 3-2 at home to Bourne Town) – the dup are scheduled to play each other, at Hinckley, on 2 April.

Kimberley lined up for their clash with Saffron as follows – Danny Rigley, Lewis Partridge, Tom Eccleshall, Takunda Mushambi, Samuel Brown, Ryan Wheatley, Sacha Markelic, Jordan Wheatley, Luis Rose, Michael Pearson, Aaron Coyle.

Both Gedling Miners Welfare (2-3 at home to Ingles) and West Bridgford (8-1 away to Kirby Muxloe) suffered defeat whilst Clifton All Whites claimed three points with a 2-0 win away to Holwell Sports, Seke Spence and Kieran Cummings netting.

Radford though, as mentioned holding joint-second with Belper United, boosted their promotion hopes when winning 3-0 at home to Birstall United Social.

All three goals would arrive in the second period with Solace Uyi-Olaye, bagging a quick-fire brace, netting in the 53rd and 56th minutes; the points were wrapped up late on when Jevin Seaton registered with a couple of minutes remaining.

Radford lined up for their game with Birstall as follows – Oluyinka Adebowale, David Adegbola, Conor Moore, David Boafo, Joseph McLaughlin, Michael Fitzhugh, Jevin Seaton, Gino Kelleher, Callum Smith, Jordan Alls, Solace Uyi-Olaye.

In the Northern Counties Eastern Premier both Sherwood Colliery and AFC Mansfield collected victories, the former seeing off visitors Staveley Miners Welfare 3-0 thanks to a brace from Gareth Curtis, and a late effort from Will Norcross, whilst Luke Walker struck early for Mansfield’s goal in their 1-0 win away to Silsden.

Division One meanwhile saw Rainworth lose 1-0 at home to Parkgate, and Retford ease to a 2-0 win away to bogey side Hall Road Rangers, Haydn Goddard and Alex Wonham both netting; Ollerton Town meanwhile, they host six on the road at Clipstone.

In easing to a 6-0 win the game would see Gavin King not only bag himself a hat-trick, but also register his 100th goal for the club, two of his goals coming in the first half.

On top of King’s treble there was a brace from Ollie Grady, his second coming from the penalty spot, and one for substitute Oscar Seth with what was actually his first touch for the club, let alone for goal.

Victories for Retford sees them in sixth place, just outside the play-offs, whilst Ollerton are mid-table and looking to push on in the closing stages of the season – they lined up against Clipstone as follows – Levi Owen, Sam Greeves, George Slack, Sam Stretton, Brandon Shaw, Conor Green, Gavin King, Joe Turner, Jacques Etia, Ollie Grady, Lewis Murr.

As for sides across the Central Midlands League there were victories for both Newark Town and SJR Worksop in the Premier North, Retford United falling to a rare defeat; Arnold Town defeated Wirksworth with Sherwood Colliery Reserves drawing away to South Normanton in the Premier South; and Mansfield Hosiery Mills Reserves crashed to a heavy defeat at home to Woodhouse Colts in the Division One Central.

In the game at Newark Town, a win which sees them top the table by two points from Clay Cross Town, a 5-0 home win was wrapped up against visiting Kiveton Miners Welfare, Ashley Finney notching three for the table-toppers, SJR of Worksop meanwhile are clinging onto sixth place and enjoyed a 3-0 win when away to AFC Phoenix, keeping them ahead of Glapwell on goal difference.

Retford United’s defeat, at home to Harworth Colliery, was only their fifth of the season, they having won the other twenty and are four points off top spot with a game in hand (fourth place Club Thorne Colliery are level with Retford but have three games in hand on Newark).

Arnold Town helped their relegation cause with a 3-0 home win over Wirksworth Ivanhoe, goals coming from Freddie Vesey, Kieron Lane, and Raheem Gordon; Sherwood Colliery Reserves were held to a 1-1 draw away to South Normanton Athletic as Ethan Wiesztort netted; and in Division One Central Mansfield Hosiery Mills Reserves crashed to an 8-1 loss at home to Woodhouse Colts.
