Cup Dreams For Notts Teams

The biggest, best and most famous domestic cup competition in world football continues this weekend as four of our counties sides host tricky games in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup with an eye very much on progression and prize money.

After winning their first ever live televised BBC appearance in the last round against Sheffield FC, Sherwood Colliery face another tough test and will be underdogs against Buxton who are riding high joint top of the Northern Premier Division.

Ranked two-tiers below on the football pyramid, Sherwood who are top of the Northern Counties East league premier division, shocked Sheffield of the league above in the preliminary round after beating Boston Town in the round previous, and will be looking for another scalp at the hands of Buxton who are managed by Nottingham born Gary Haywood and who include former Forest winger and Northern Ireland international Jamie Ward.

Sherwood however mean business themselves this season, founded in 2008 the team have risen up the pyramid and this season have a perfect record in the league, the side are one to watch as potential banana skin fodder for the big boys of this stage.

A packed house at the idyllic Debdale Sports Club is guaranteed, adult tickets are £5 with cash and card accepted on the day.

Basford United are another side in cup action with the club still looking for their first win of the season as they entertain Stourbridge at Greenwich Avenue.

Steve Chettle’s side have so far drew four and lost two of their six Northern Premier league games this season and take on opponents who have found the start to the campaign equally as tough, in the Southern League Central Stourbridge have just two points from their five games played, so both sides will be looking forward to a welcome distraction, and getting a first victory to kick start their campaign and cup run.

Adult tickets are £9 with concessions £7 and U16’s £3 with a family ticket of four priced at £20.

Worksop Town came through an entertaining couple of encounters against Eastwood CFC in the last round, eventually coming through 5-2 after a 4-4 draw initially at Sandy Lane.

The Tigers host Newport Pagnall Town tomorrow with a place in the 2nd Qualifying Round at stake for the winners. Finally Carlton Town host Stratford Town tomorrow in a 3pm kick off at the Bill Stokeld Stadium, Stoke Lane.

Carlton saw off Maltby Main in the last round after a replay and are going well under Mark Harvey and Tommy Brookbanks still unbeaten in the NPL Midland Division thus far.

Good luck to all our counties teams and if you can get along to see any of our sides in action, please do so. Our clubs need your support to survive, whilst each winning team in the cup this weekend will also benefit from £2,250 with a next round minimum prize of a further £1,125.
