Strachan Sets Outlaws Try Record
As Rugby League try-scorers go, George Strachan of the Nottingham Outlaws, has been up there for some time, and now his try-scoring tally proves it.
Not only was Saturday gone (14 August) memorable for the Outlaws ending an horrific, nine-game, losing streak, thus earning a first-ever win over opponents East Hull, but, with a hat-trick from the veteran, George Strachan, he moved himself to the top of the clubs’ all-time try-scoring charts.
Previously held by club legend, Paul Calland (95 tries), Strachan’s superb treble moved him two clear, onto 97, in what was his 246th appearance for the club, continually extending his own record there.
It has been some sixteen years since Strachan made his Outlaws debut, first appearing in the 46-22 win away to Manchester (pictured above) back in 2005, coming off the bench – the line-up that day would see Strachan appear alongside other club legends in Trenham, Shingfield, Howells, Barrett, Weller; Crick, Hemingway; Woodcock, Brown, Parkinson; Radford, Sissons; Millward, Subs- Maggs, Gill, Yorke, Strachan.
At the time of his arrival at the club, the Lancashire-native was a first year student at Nottingham Trent University, soon becoming a dedicated, fan favourite, especially with the power game he possesses when on the attack.
It has been seven years since his most prolific season however, the veteran now, completing 11 tries during the 2013 campaign (he’s also finished top try scorer in the previous two), whilst Saturday’s treble, it was not the first time he’d achieved that feat, quite possibly it won’t be the last either.
In over-taking a legend of the prowess, and stature, of someone like Calland, he bagging his 95 in a very impressive 130 outings for the Outlaws from halfback, was quick of the mark in congratulating his former team-mate in breaking the record.
He said: “I couldn’t think of a better man to pass the record on to.
“(Strachan) is a true Outlaws legend, a fantastic player and a great team-mate.
“It was a pleasure to play with the ‘Blackpool Rock’ for so many years and I hope he can keep going for a few more.”
That nickname, ‘Blackpool Rock,’ alongside ‘Rocket Man,’ is one of a number in which the new record-holder is known by, and the Outlaws Chairman, Richard Johnson, added of the feat: “George is an Outlaws legend through and through and has served the club magnificently as a player and a coach for more than sixteen years.
“He is a favourite with the fans for his robust style of play, with plenty of powerful surges, and big hits on his opposite numbers.
“Try scoring comes natural to him, but for me his biggest attributes are his commitment to the club, his willingness to put time and effort into mentoring the younger players around him, and the positive attitude he has, both in victory and defeat.
“He truly is an Outlaws legend and very deserving of the two club records that he now holds”
In addition to those 97 tries for the Nottingham Outlaws, Strachan in now up to 390 points for the club, a total which was supplemented by that one goal in which he added in the club record, 102-6 victory, against the Gloucestershire Warriors, way back in 2015, when he was still a mere fledgling.
The club, and the fans, are hoping for many more appearances, points, and tries to come, from their very own, ‘Blackpool Rock.’
