Carlton See Off Merthyr In Friendly

Carlton Town 3-0 Merthyr Town (Friendly) 24.07.21

Carlton Town produced their best display of pre-season with a 3-0 win against Merthyr Town at Stoke Lane.

With ex-Nottingham Forest legends Garry Birtles and John Robertson and TalkSport host Johnny Owens amongst the spectators, goals from Aaron Opoku, Tyler Blake and Niall Davie secured a comfortable win against their step 3 opponents.

The Martyrs, backed by an excellent vocal travelling support, began the game well and pushed the Millers back in the early stages.

But it was Opoku, making his first appearance of the summer, who opened the scoring on 16 minutes.  Davie sent over a cross from the left and Opoku did well to bring it under control before hitting an overhead kick into the top corner.

That seemed to boost the home side and they almost added a second when Blake met another Davie cross, only for Steve Cann in the Merthyr goal to make a superb save.

Blake and Nat Watson then combined with the latter crossing for Opoku who headed just wide.

Blake doubled the lead 10 minutes into the second half, stealing away from his marker and heading home a Davie corner.

And it was Davie himself who sealed the win with eight minutes remaining as he ran onto a Dan Brown ball, burst through on the right hand side, cut into the area and rifled home into the corner of the net.

The visiting supporters kept singing until the end but on the pitch it was clearly Carlton’s day.

Carlton Town: Trialist, Gorman, Fletcher (Cockram 67), Brown, T. Moore, Maddison (Shaw 84), Watson (Matthews 46), Holmes (Daft 70), Opoku (K. Moore 84), Blake, Davie (Flint 84).
