Eight Cup Finals For Burchnall

Notts County Head Coach Ian Burchnall has described the run in for the remainder of the season as “eight cup finals” after stating “We all believe we’re going to be in the playoffs” in this week’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s must win National League match at Altrincham.

Since taking over from Neal Ardley last month, where Notts were sixth in the division and three points better off than those outside the playoffs, the Magpies are eight league games later now tenth and three points adrift of the playoffs with a further eight games still to go.

It hasn’t been an easy ride for Burchnall since being announced as Ardley’s predecessor and whilst some fans think he’ll turn things around, others are more worried that a man with little experience of National League football, is the right appointment in taking the club forward and getting them out of the division (the right way) and back into the Football League.

Recent performances however have suggested that Notts can dominate matches at this level and the side do look improved in possession, major factors in the sides slip have included a poor conversion of opportunity to goal, which has also lead to conceding fifteen at the other end in Burchnall’s nine games in charge.

One of those players suffering in goalscoring form is the clubs top scorer Kyle Wootton who has not netted since the FA Trophy semi-final loss against Hornchurch, Burchnall’s first game in charge of the club.

The Head Coach said on the players recent form “He’s contributing massively to the team and consistently getting in the positions to finish. He’s not afraid, even though he’s missed a couple.”

“We all believe in him and the goals will come, there’s no doubt about it.”

Ahead of Altrincham tomorrow, who are one place and five points behind County, in eleventh in the league, Burchnall is still upbeat and still confident that he can find the right formula to take all three points, saying “Even though recent results have been disappointing, there are enough aspects of our play that make us feel like once we get the result we want – no matter how we get it – it’s going to kick us on.

“I believe whether we’re home or away we have the capabilities and, when we generate the momentum to get back into the play-off spots, we’ll be a match for anyone.

“We need that one result to propel us and that’s what we’re searching for now.”

Notts will be hoping a win can regain supporters trust, gain some confidence within the camp, and add much needed points in the final run-in which will be hectic in May as the clubs involved all charge for one destination and those two spots for promotion to the football league.

Kick off is at 3pm Saturday afternoon and you can stream the match live with news on how to do so via the Notts County website here.
