Jason Lee – My Campaign

Jason Lee played for both Nottingham clubs as well as Mansfield Town … but, surprisingly to many, netted more goals with Notts County than he did with Nottingham Forest.

Now he is bidding to become the new Chief Executive of the Professional Footballers Association in succession to Gordon Taylor.

And Lee took time off from the campaign trail to reflect on his time with the Magpies in the newest episode of the Magpie Circle podcast.

And also relate a quite incredible story of how World Cup referee Pierluigi Collina insisted on asking for his shirt after a European tie with Forest.

Lee netted 17 goals in 74 appearances for Notts from 2006-08 – compared to a return of 15 goals from 95 appearances for the Reds.

And, in another surprising statistic, he is the Notts’ record holder for most number of yellow cards in a season – with his 17 yellows (plus a retrospective red card via video) in the 06-07 campaign.

Lee said: “The yellow cards became something of a standing joke among the lads.

“Every week the referee seemed to call me over and book me and although I was competitive I did feel like I was being booked on reputation alone.

“Joining Notts was a big move for me. I had wanted to sign for them for quite a time.

“I had settled my family in Nottingham after playing for Forest and it always appealed to me.

“Steve Thompson gave me the opportunity and I was really desperate to prove my worth.

“I got really fit, was made the captain, and had a good season. Those 16 goals were the highest number I scored in a single season. in my career.”

Lee has now revealed his candidature for the vacant PFA chief executive role.

It’s something he feels passionately about.

“All my life I have had to fight hard for what I have achieved.

“I played in all four divisions of the English game and I feel I am well placed to represent the views of players.

“I have worked with the PFA in equalities for several years now and I feel I have a lot more to offer the PFA.”
