Notts Bat Away The Cobwebs

It’s been a good long wait, but the boys of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club were finally in action this weekend as they played their first friendly of their delayed summer in travelling to Edgbaston for a two day game against Warwickshire.

In two separate 60 over per side days starting on Friday, Notts opened the bat under the sunny Birmingham skies with Ben Slater and Ben Compton selected to face the first overs of the year. It wasn’t long however before the first wicket of the season came with just eight runs on the scorecard for Notts, Slater was edged to the slips off the bowling of Hannon-Dalby.

Haseeb Hameed came in to give Notts hoped stability but it wasn’t long before two quick wickets saw first Compton, then Clarke fall with the score at 35/3. Captain Steven Mullaney came in and quickly ramped up a fifty partnership with Hameed with Notts 91/3 at lunch.

In the afternoon session Hameed reached his fifty with back to back boundries before Mullaney was bowled for 26 by Ollie Stone. Samit Patel went shortly after as Notts lost five wickets for twenty-one runs with Moores and Evison lasting no time at all before Hameed was bowled for 65.

At 125/8 Notts steadied the ship through Trego and Chappell before Trego was dismissed on 38 with Notts two further wickets taking the all out total to under 180. With Slater and Compton heading out again to finish the sixty overs Notts eventually put on 182 for the loss of 12 wickets.

At the turnaround Notts went out to bowl with Jake Ball taking the first wicket of the year bowling Rhodes with Joey Evison taking his first wicket for Notts with his first ball to capture Yates with the homeside 43/2.

Zak Chappell took Matt Lamb before the home side steadied the ship to reach 100/3 before Samit Patel took the wicket of Ian Bell with Warwickshire 125/4.

Before the days end Trego took his first Notts wicket, the wicket of Sam Burgess before Warwickshire closed the play on 144/5 with Hose 41 not out and Bresnan on one.

On Saturday it was Warwickshire batting first but a rain delay halted things so that both sides decided to bat a session each.

A much more convincing display in bat saw Warwickshire 137/0 from their 38 overs and in reply Notts were 29/1 before more rain set in.

Under the grey skies Notts ended Saturday 84/2 with Peter Trego 58 not out capping a good fine start personally, some things in cricket never change and the weather was largely a hindrance as usual but great to have cricket back with Notts now taking on Leicestershire in another friendly match on Tuesday before the season proper starts on Saturday against Derbyshire.
