Marshall & Clifton Next In At Basford

Northern Premier League side Basford United have added more to their post season additions already signed by Manager Steve Chettle after this week capturing Marcus Marshall from Matlock Town and James Clifton from Corby.

On signing for the club Marshall stated “The ambitions the club has attracted me. Coming from Nottingham I’ve seen this place grow from nothing to what it is now. Their aim is to get promoted to get out of this league, and that’s exactly what I want.”

Marshall played 38 times in the Northern Premier League last season for Matlock scoring 14 goals and said “Personally, I think I did pretty well. I always kept my standards high and I expected the same of the team. For whatever reason, our season didn’t go great. We had our ups and downs. On a personal level, I did very well; more goals are always something I’ll always be aiming for.”

The 30-year-old is still to meet his new team-mates at Basford following his move from the Gladiators during lockdown and stated “It’s strange not being able to come down to the ground and do your meet and greets. I know a few of the lads already and those I don’t know I’ve seen them around the league, so it’s not been too bad.” When asked what his new fans were to expect of him for the coming season Marshall a competitive hard working attacker stated “That’s what I’m looking to bring to this side, I bring a lot of energy I can go to feet, go in behind or assist with that final pass, as well as score my fair share. I feel like I’m an allrounder.”

28-year-old full back James Clifton signs having played under Steve Chettle in the past stated “I’m over the moon to be at the club. I worked with Steve at Nuneaton and really enjoyed my time there with him.”

“The ambition of the club was a factor in my decision to join but working with Steve again was probably the main reason.”

Despite not knowing when football may get going again, Clifton is already looking ahead to the new season with high aspirations.

“My personal aims always start with promotion,” he said. “I also want to play well week in week out and be consistent throughout the season and then getting into teams of the year and awards like that are then a bonus.”
