The Biggest Boxing Bout This Week?

Ask anyone outside of the ‘golden contract’ circle what the biggest fight of the week is and they’ll tell you “the biggest fight of the week is also the biggest fight of the year and not even that it is also the biggest fight of the decade and maybe even the century”.

Tyson Fury v Deontay Wilder II is just around the corner and as the days countdown to an epic bout between two heavyweight world champions in Las Vegas in what will be the early hours of Sunday morning coming we might just have something ahead of the main event for Nottingham fight fans perhaps even more special as they look to ‘back their man’ in his attempt to reach his own bit of boxing big time.

Gedling born boxer Leigh Wood is in action this Friday night live on Sky Sports from York Hall as the 31 year old takes on either Tyrone McCullagh, Jazza Dickens or Ryan Walsh in the semi-finals of the Golden Contract with the winners going through to a final place that will earn them a lucrative new deal with Matchroom Boxing.

The draw for the final four is tomorrow in London with Wood (23-1) potentially facing Ryan Walsh (25-2-2), Tyrone McCullagh (14-0) or Jazza Dickens (28-3) in the featherweight division.

The Nottingham boxer and former Commonwealth Champion is fully aware of British title holder Walsh and the experienced Dickens but as singled Derry born Northern Irishman McCullagh as one he knows least about.

“I’ve watched a lot of the opponents apart from McCullagh,” said Wood. “Regardless, we’re just preparing for all of the various styles the same way we normally do.”

“There’s not one of them in particular I’d prefer to face in the semi-finals. Each one is different but I believe I’d adapt to beat them all so it’s a level playing field.”

After the draw is made tomorrow Wood will know his opponent ahead of Friday’s clash with just over 72 hours to prepare for what is his biggest fight to date.

Wood stated “It’s so good to be fighting on a really big platform. I’m building my name. Those who didn’t manage to get a ticket can still tune in on the night. All that is a bonus, though, because my performance will be good anyway.”

All the action from the sell-out event at York Hall starts on Sky Sports on Friday 21st February at 7:30pm.
