Double Delight For Beeston

It was a double winning weekend for Beeston Hockey Club as on Saturday the women’s first team beat Birmingham University 3-1 in the Investec Premier League whilst on Sunday the men convincingly beat the University of Exeter by five clear goals in their Premier Division clash.

Beeston Women took the lead in their match against University of Birmingham Ladies through Sophie Robinson after 21 minutes and were 2-0 up when Lauran Burrell hit home just two minutes later giving the home side a healthy advantage at the break.

Moments into the second half though Birmingham pulled one back through a penalty corner when on 36 Rafaela Brandao-Lee slotted home on the rebound but Rebecca Malyon restored the Bees two goal advantage soon after on 45 smashing home a pull back from just a couple of metres.

That win takes the Bees to nine points from nine games played a place above Birmingham in eighth with East Grinstead away next up on Saturday.

The men went to work in Exeter and was 2-0 up from two penalty corners by half time with goals from Elliott Hibbell and Nick Park. Moments into the second half the away side were three up when Kyle Marshall scored following another penalty corner and it was four on 56 minutes when Elliott Barton netted from open play.

As time ran out there was enough on the clock for Beeston to net a fifth when Chris Proctor scored a field goal to give the Bees maximum points on a day to celebrate on what was an impressive away performance.

That win keeps the Bees in eighth but four points above the bottom two and now with a fighting chance top catch those above them as they go in to next weekends game at East Grinstead.
