Stags Take Point At Shrimpers

Morecambe 1-1 Mansfield Town (EFL League Two) 20.10.20

Mansfield Town came from behind to earn a point at the Globe Arena after the Stags got off to a terrible start, they fought back and earned a share of the spoils against opposition in the playoff places whilst Graham Coughlan’s men still look for their first win of the campaign.

The home side were in the lead as early as the third minute when Stockton crossed low for Adam Phillips to slide in and score and whilst Sweeney could have levelled, heading over from a corner, things could have got worse for the Stags when Stockton almost capitalised on an error to cross low evading the outstretched boot of Wilding with the goal gaping.

It was the Stags though who levelled things up as Gordon crossed low into Charsley who flicked with his back heel into the corner of the net. A first Mansfield Town goal for the former Everton midfielder.

In the second half McLaughlin tried his luck with a curling free kick which was well dealt with by Turner in the Morecambe goal whilst at the other end Stockton forced a fine save from a flying Marek Stech as his header was brilliantly palmed away by the big Czech goalkeeper.

Both sides had chances late on as Farrend Rawson had the ball in the back of the net but pulled back for a foul, the same player heading wide a free kick the closest the Stags would come to winning the match.

A good solid performance against a decent team in Morecambe, Manager Graham Coughlan stated after “I thought we played well and I hoped we could’ve maybe won it.”

“I asked the lads after Saturday for character and spirit. I asked them to fight and battle. I think they responded and did what I asked of them tonight. We did a lot of work on Sunday and Monday.”

The Stags move up a place in the table to 22nd with a trip to Cheltenham next up at the weekend, let’s hope they’ll be at the races come kick off.
