Basford Thumped By Matlock
Basford United 0-5 Matlock Town (Northern Premier League Cup Round Two) 14.01.20
Basford United were knocked out of the Integro League Cup with a 5-0 defeat at home to Matlock Town.
Jordan Sinnott struck twice from long range before Chib Chilaka struck a third goal before the break. Matlock continued to look the more dangerous and Sinnott completed his hat-trick with a well hit free kick. The win was complete when Tomas Poole got on the score sheet.
Basford United made seven changes from the side that beat Bamber Bridge in their last game. Jack Thomas, Nat Watson, Kieran Preston and captain Stef Galinski were the only players who retained their place in the line-up.
With just five minutes on the clock the game had its first goal. Sinnott found room to fire out goal from 25-yards out and it took a big deflection on its way into the back of the net to give Matlock the lead. The visitors then took aim from range again just minutes later. This time Chib Chilaka fired just over the bar.
Matlock continued to force the issue with Spencer Harris heading over before Chilaka dragged an effort wide of the post. Up the other end James Carvell wasted Basford’s first real chance blazing it over the bar.
Sinnott made no mistake with his next effort. He found space for another long-range strike and this time it found the back of the net via the fingertips of Kieran Preston.
From the restart Carvell had another chance to get but his effort was blocked before both James Tague and Chilaka fired wide of the mark. And two minutes before the break Chilaka did have a goal. He found space to blast the ball into the bottom corner to give Matlock three goal cushion at the break.
The second half started like the first half with Matlock on the front foot. Tague again took aim from range this time forcing Preston into a good save. Basford did have a chance through Nat Watson but Jon Stewart produced a good save before the visitors increased their lead. Sinnott fired a free kick into the far corner and Matlock were not done there. Poole burst forward from defence and fired an effort past Preston and into the bottom corner.
Basford put up a fight but the Matlock defence stood strong blocking efforts from both Carvell and substitute Ash Worsfold as they held onto their clean sheet.
